Essar Renewables, the renewable energy arm of Essar Power, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NHPC Ltd for a 300 megawatt (MW) project in Andhra Pradesh. Essar Power will invest about ₹4,500 crore in the project.
The project will combine solar power, wind power and large batteries. The aim is to supply clean electricity steadily, even when the sun is down or the wind is weak. Solar and wind power go up and down with the weather, so it helps to understand how this type of project works.
What happened
According to The Hindu BusinessLine, Essar Renewables signed the PPA with NHPC for a 300 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. The Hindu reported the same deal and named the company Essar Renewables Ltd. (ERL).
A PPA is a contract to buy and sell power. The buyer agrees to buy electricity from a project on agreed terms, often for many years. Neither report gave the power price, the length of the contract or the date the project will start supplying power.
Both reports say Essar Power will invest about ₹4,500 crore. They do not say how the money will be raised, for example through loans or the company's own funds.
What FDRE means
"Firm" means the supply is steady and can be counted on. "Dispatchable" means power can be sent to the grid when it is needed, not only when the weather allows.
Think of a small shop. If it opens only when the owner feels like it, customers cannot plan. If it opens at fixed hours every day, people can depend on it. FDRE tries to make clean power work like the second shop.
According to both reports, the project will combine solar, wind and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). A BESS is a large bank of batteries. It stores extra power when production is high and releases it later. For example, solar power made at noon can be used in the evening.
The numbers
| Item | Detail | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Project size | 300 MW | Both reports |
| Investment | About ₹4,500 crore | Both reports |
| Location | Andhra Pradesh | Both reports |
| Power sources | Solar, wind and BESS | Both reports |
| Essar Power's planned portfolio | About 5 GW: renewable, thermal and gas-based | Both reports |
| India's renewable target, as cited by the company | 500 GW by 2030 | The Hindu BusinessLine |
The table puts the main figures in one place. Only The Hindu BusinessLine mentioned the national target.
By our calculation, ₹4,500 crore for 300 MW works out to about ₹15 crore per MW. Treat this as a rough guide only. Batteries add to a project's cost, so this figure should not be compared directly with a solar-only farm.
Also by our calculation, 300 MW is 6% of the roughly 5 GW (5,000 MW) portfolio Essar Power plans to build. One gigawatt (GW) equals 1,000 MW.
What the company leaders said
Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, Operating Partner - Infrastructure at Essar Group, said Essar's energy experience and its focus on new technologies give it "a strong foundation to participate in this next phase of India's energy growth", according to The Hindu.
Ankur Kumar, CEO of Essar Power, said the company is focused on building a strong portfolio across solar, wind and BESS. The Hindu quoted him calling the NHPC project "an important milestone in this journey". The Hindu BusinessLine reported him saying the project will strengthen the portfolio and support the company's aim of building a renewable business that can grow in size.
The company linked the project to India's target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. It also said its plans support energy security, grid reliability and a move towards lower-carbon power.
Why it matters to a common investor
The Hindu BusinessLine describes NHPC as the largest hydropower development organisation. Over the years, NHPC has also moved into solar and wind energy. This agreement adds a mixed solar, wind and battery project to that work.
If you follow the power sector, the main point is the move from clean power that comes and goes to clean power that is steady. The company said electricity demand keeps growing in India's industrial and urban centres. Grid operators need supply they can plan around, and batteries help solar and wind provide it.
The reports did not say whether Essar Renewables or Essar Power has shares listed on a stock exchange. They also did not say how the deal may affect NHPC's earnings. You can follow more company deals in our business section and sector trends on our markets page.
Risks to keep in mind
- Missing details: The power price, contract length and finish date were not reported. Without them, it is hard to judge how much the project may earn.
- Building risk: Large power projects can face delays in getting land, equipment or a grid connection. Delays can push up costs.
- Cost may change: The investment is described as "about" ₹4,500 crore. The final figure could be different.
- Company claims: Most of this news comes from the company. Its 5 GW portfolio and other goals are plans, not results yet.
What to watch next
Watch for the power price and contract length, the building timeline and how Essar Power raises the ₹4,500 crore. Progress on its 5 GW plan will also matter. NHPC shareholders can check the BSE or NSE website for any filing about the deal.
Energy security is one reason India wants more power made at home. Our story on what oil prices mean for India's import bill explains why the cost of imported fuel matters.
Words explained
- PPA (Power Purchase Agreement): A contract in which a buyer agrees to buy electricity from a power project on fixed terms.
- FDRE: Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy. Clean power that comes in steadily and can be sent to the grid when needed.
- BESS: Battery Energy Storage System. Large batteries that store power and release it later.
- MW and GW: Units that measure how much power a plant can produce. One GW is 1,000 MW.
- Portfolio: All the projects or assets a company owns, taken together.
- Thermal power: Electricity made by burning fuel, such as coal, to create steam.
- Grid: The network of wires that carries electricity from power plants to homes and factories.
- Hydropower: Electricity made from moving water, such as water flowing through a dam.
