Biocon's profit fell by more than half in the July to September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27), even though revenue rose 2% to ₹4,389 crore. The company said shipments worth about $20 million reached customers only in October. Their costs were booked in the quarter, but their sales were not.
For investors, the big question is simple. Is this a one-time slip or a deeper problem? Biocon's top management says it is a timing issue. Reports also give different profit figures, so we lay out each one below.
What happened
Biocon announced its results on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. A live results blog by The Hindu BusinessLine listed Biocon and Zydus Life among the companies whose profit declined that day.
Revenue grew, led by the generics business. But profit and margin fell. According to Economic Times, CEO and Managing Director Shreehas Tambe said the second half of the year will be stronger than the first. Biocon shares closed 0.19% higher at ₹344 on the BSE, according to a separate Hindu BusinessLine report.
The numbers
| Item | Q2 FY27 | Compared with a year ago | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹4,389 crore | Up 2% (ET), up 2.2% (BusinessLine) | Both |
| Total income | ₹4,423.4 crore | ₹4,388.5 crore a year ago; ET says up 1% | Both |
| Total expenses | ₹4,361.9 crore | ₹4,205.3 crore a year ago | BusinessLine |
| EBITDA | ₹865 crore | Down 7% | ET |
| EBITDA margin | 20% | 22% a year ago | ET |
| Biosimilars revenue | ₹2,809 crore | Up 3% | Both |
| Generics revenue | ₹774 crore | Up 10% | Both |
| Services (Syngene) revenue | ₹833 crore | Down 9% | BusinessLine |
The table shows sales rising slowly while costs rose faster, which squeezed profit.
By our calculation, total expenses rose by ₹156.6 crore, or about 3.7%. Total income rose by only ₹34.9 crore, or about 0.8%. Biosimilars and generics together form the biopharma business. Its revenue grew 5% to ₹3,583 crore, according to Economic Times. Services, run through the subsidiary Syngene International, was the weak part. Its revenue fell 9%, though BusinessLine noted a recovery from the previous quarter.
Reports differ on the profit figure
The reports do not give the same profit number:
- Economic Times: consolidated net profit fell 52% year-on-year. It did not give a rupee figure.
- The Hindu BusinessLine (first figure): profit after tax fell 51% to ₹41 crore.
- The Hindu BusinessLine (second figure): consolidated net profit fell 57.3% to ₹56.7 crore, from ₹132.8 crore a year ago, citing the company's regulatory filing.
We could not confirm which figure is right. Readers should check Biocon's results filing on the BSE or NSE website. When you read it, note the exact label next to each profit line. All the figures agree on one thing: profit fell by more than half.
Why the margin fell: delayed shipments
Tambe said shipments worth about $20 million had not reached customers by the end of September. So the company could not count them as Q2 revenue. Economic Times put this at about 5% of quarterly revenue. BusinessLine put it at about 5% of biopharma revenue.
Think of a shopkeeper who pays for stock and transport in September, but the buyer receives the goods in October. The cost lands in September and the sale lands in October. September then looks weak. Tambe said this is what happened. He blamed geopolitical and logistics problems for the delays. "There is no underlying business challenge," he said, adding that the products were sold in October.
He also said EBITDA margins will stay "in the region of mid-20s". This is the company's own view, not a reported result.
What the company expects in the second half
Tambe pointed to these growth drivers for the second half of FY27 (October 2026 to March 2027). They are company plans and estimates, not results:
- Pertuzumab in Brazil: a 10-year partnership with contracted supply worth about $400 million. Supplies are expected to start in the fourth quarter of FY27. Tambe said there will be "some ramp up, ramp down" over the years.
- Pertuzumab in Europe: launch expected in the same quarter. Tambe estimated the European market opportunity at $600-700 million.
- US biosimilars: Yesintek, Biocon's ustekinumab biosimilar, has reached 34% market share in the US. Yesafili, its aflibercept biosimilar, is expected to grow in the second half.
- Insulin: the insulin business has grown from less than $100 million to more than $300 million, Tambe said. The company has expanded insulin capacity in Malaysia for US demand.
BusinessLine also reported a global settlement with Genentech for Pebrilzo, Biocon's pertuzumab biosimilar. Tambe said it secured the earliest licensed launch dates in Europe, the UK, the US and emerging markets. Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said Biocon's pertuzumab became the first monoclonal antibody biosimilar recommended under a new tailored pathway of the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
What it means for a small investor
A single quarter can mislead when sales slip from one month to the next. The October revenue should show up in the next quarter's numbers. That is the simplest test of the company's explanation. You can also compare this with other drug makers in the same results season, such as Emcure Pharma, whose Q2 profit rose 29.3%.
Risks to keep in mind
- The second-half growth is a forecast by management. It may not happen as planned.
- The shipping problems came from geopolitical issues. Similar delays could come back.
- Syngene's revenue fell 9%, which pulled down overall growth.
- The Brazil supply value is spread over 10 years, and yearly amounts may go up and down.
What to watch next
Watch the Q3 FY27 results for the delayed $20 million of sales and for EBITDA margin moving back towards the mid-20s. Also watch for the pertuzumab launches in Brazil and Europe in the fourth quarter, and for any recovery at Syngene.
