Bata India's profit grew much faster than its sales in the July to September quarter. The footwear maker's consolidated net profit rose 30.4% to ₹18.11 crore in Q2 FY27, up from ₹13.89 crore a year earlier, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. Revenue from operations grew 7.54% to ₹861.78 crore.
The company gives three reasons: a wider sales network, cleaner stock and fewer discounts. The result shows that a shop can earn more without selling a lot more.
What happened
Bata India announced its results on Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Q2 FY27 is the second quarter of the financial year 2026-27, which covers July to September 2026. NDTV Profit listed Bata India among the stocks likely to be in focus during trading on Wednesday.
BusinessLine reported that profit grew even though most of the festive season fell in the October to December quarter this year. A higher average selling price helped profit. Sanjay S. Rao became Managing Director and CEO on 1 October. He said sales had grown for the fourth quarter in a row.
Rao also said like-for-like sales and average selling price grew strongly in Retail. He added that the Franchise channel and the channel the company calls I&D both grew in double digits.
The numbers
Economic Times reported more figures from the company's Q2 investor presentation. One of them is adjusted profit before tax (PBT). PBT is profit before income tax is paid. "Adjusted" means the company has left out some items so the regular business is easier to see.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 | Q2 FY26 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹861.78 crore | Not given | Up 7.54% |
| Consolidated net profit | ₹18.11 crore | ₹13.89 crore | Up 30.4% |
| Adjusted PBT | ₹36 crore | ₹27.4 crore | Up 31.4% |
| Cash operating profit | ₹158.8 crore | Not given | Up 9.3% |
| PBT margin | 4.2% | Not given | Up 76 basis points |
| Share of full-price sales | 86% | 77% | Up 9 points |
Both profit measures grew about four times as fast as revenue (our calculation). "Not given" means our sources did not give the year-ago figure.
A 4.2% PBT margin means that out of every ₹100 of sales, Bata kept about ₹4.20 as profit before tax. Since the margin is small, even a small change in costs or discounts can move profit a lot.
Why profit grew faster than sales
Better control of stock is the main story. More shoes were sold at full price, without a discount. Rao said the quarter had the company's highest full-price sales and lower markdowns. He said this happened even though raw material costs and wages went up.
Economic Times reported that Bata's inventory index was 26% lower than its Q2 FY24 level. Stock turns rose 21% to 2.6, from 2.2 a year earlier. Product availability improved 18%. This means shoppers found the sizes and styles they wanted more often.
According to BusinessLine, Rao said 92% of stock was fresh and net stock was 7% lower than on 30 September 2025. These two stock figures compare against different dates, so they measure different things. Rao also said a store method called Zero Base Merchandising, now used in 850 stores, had improved the shopping experience and sales per square foot.
Gross margin was ₹478 crore and improved by 8 basis points, Economic Times said. The company said channel mix cut the margin by 58 basis points. Economic Times also noted that the presentation does not say how much of the profit growth came from the rise in full-price sales.
A bigger sales network
Bata is not depending only on its own shops anymore. Its key retail outlets (KROs) grew 2.6 times in a year, from 1,478 in September 2025 to 3,895 in September 2026. That is 2,417 more outlets (our calculation). The company aims to have more than 5,000 by the third quarter of FY27.
- Bata shoes are sold in more than 17,000 multi-brand outlets.
- The network now covers 1,690 towns, up from 1,635 a year earlier.
- About 200 field sales staff support the expansion.
- Sales through distributors grew in double digits, and secondary sales grew in the mid-twenties percent.
- Men's open and closed footwear led the growth.
BusinessLine said Bata runs more than 2,000 stores, counting franchise stores.
Online sales
Sales on Bata.com grew 26%, but total online sales, including other shopping websites, grew only 5.4%, according to Economic Times. Online sales made up 13.3% of turnover. Over 300 Bata stores serve orders through Myntra's quick delivery service, MNow. About 55% of home deliveries arrive within 48 hours. A three-hour delivery service reaches about 1,800 pincodes. The Bata app has been downloaded more than 450,000 times and brings in about 14% of Bata.com sales.
What it means for a common investor
This quarter shows that profit can grow through better selling, not just more selling. When fewer shoes are sold at a discount, more of each sale stays as profit. You can see similar patterns in other quarterly results. For example, Marico's Q2 FY27 profit also grew faster than its revenue.
The profit is still small compared with sales, at ₹18.11 crore on ₹861.78 crore of revenue. One good quarter does not prove a long trend. Our sources did not report how the share price moved after the results. You can follow price moves on our markets page.
Risks to keep in mind
- Costs: Rao mentioned higher raw material costs and wage increases. If these keep rising, margins could shrink.
- Channel mix: More sales through distributors and other outlets cut the margin by 58 basis points this quarter.
- Festive timing: Festive sales moved to Q3 this year, so quarter-to-quarter comparisons may look uneven.
- Online growth: Total online sales grew 5.4%, much slower than Bata.com alone.
- Targets: The goal of more than 5,000 KROs is a company plan, not a result yet.
What to watch next
The October to December quarter will show how strong festive demand was. Rao said, "With festive business shifting to Q3, we expect the growth momentum to continue." This is the company's own expectation, not a fact yet. Look at whether full-price sales stay close to 86% and whether the KRO count goes past 5,000. Also watch how the new CEO carries out his plans for premium products, a bigger network and careful spending. For exact figures, read Bata India's filing on the BSE or NSE website.
